FAQ

Calculations & expressions

Working with fractions, functions, complex numbers and expression editing.

  • Where can I find all calculator functions?

The calculator provides more functions than can fit on the keypad.

For this reason, the OTHER key exists. In the Compact keyboard layout it appears as the secondary function of the 0 key. When you press it, you will see a menu containing all functions that do not have their own dedicated key.

  • What is the result of 6/2(2+1)?

The result depends on how you interpret the expression: whether (2+1) is part of the divisor, or whether the expression is interpreted as 6/2 multiplied by (2+1).

HiPER lets you choose the desired operand grouping: strong (both 2 and (2+1) are part of the divisor) or weak (6/2 is evaluated first and then multiplied by (2+1)). See Settings → Expression → Operand grouping.

  • Why does the calculator show that √(x²) = x instead of |x|?

It depends on the domain in which you are calculating. In the real domain, √(x²) is defined as |x|.

In the complex domain, the square root is a multivalued function. It follows the argument of the number — that is, the angle of the number in the complex plane — and therefore √(x²) returns x (up to sign) rather than |x|.

    For example, if x = i, then i² = −1 and √(i²) = √(−1) = i (up to sign), while |i| = 1, so the results differ.

If you want the real-number behavior √(x²) = |x|, switch the calculator to the real domain. See Mode → Data range.

  • Why does the calculator show that 1 / 3 = 0.3 instead of 0.3333333333?

    The result is correct.

The calculator automatically detects repeating decimals. When a digit (or group of digits) repeats infinitely, it marks the repetend with a vinculum.

In the result 0.3, the bar above the 3 indicates that the digit 3 repeats forever. This is a more precise representation than writing 0.333333333333.

You can turn this feature off in Settings → Formatting → Mark repetend by vinculum.

Graphs & tables

Plotting functions and generating tables.

  • How do I plot a function?

Enter the function with one or two variabls (e.g. sin(x) or sin(x)*cos(x)) and press the More... button on the display.

You can zoom and pan the plot with touch gestures.

Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to solve them.

  • I purchased the Pro version but still see ads

On Android, the Pro version is installed as a separate app. If you still see ads, you are probably running the free version HiPER Scientific Calculator instead of the Pro version HiPER Calc Pro.

You can safely uninstall the free version after installing the Pro one.

  • The result looks wrong. What should I check?

    First verify

    • the anglular unit (degrees vs radians) - press the DRG key until you see the expected anglular unit indicator on the display,
    • result format - tap on the result to change it,
    • check if complex numbers are enabled or disabled - open the Mode menu item and change it,
    • if you are still convinced the result is wrong, please don’t hesitate to reach us at android@hiperlabs.eu.
  • Colors are wrong on my Xiaomi in dark mode

This issue is caused by a bug in Xiaomi’s MIUI system. Certain versions (12.0, 12.5 and 14.0) automatically modify app colors in dark mode, which affects HiPER Calc Pro.

To fix the problem, open MIUI’s More dark mode settings and disable dark mode adjustments for HiPER Calc. After that, the calculator will use its own correct dark theme.

The issue was fixed in MIUI 13.0, but unfortunately reappeared in version 14.0.
